In Europe and Russia there are currently about
1,9:100,000 cases of hand amputations. Unfortunately, various methods of rehabilitation of the patients
including such as Krukenberg’s hand and prosthetic devices can not be considered as efficacious and proper.
Hand transplantation is actually
a procedure that may enhance the function and appearance of carefully selected patients, which lost their hands.
However, medical risks, ethical and lawful concerns are still available so further study and progress in both
microsurgery and transplant immunology are required before the hand transplantation can be considered
a perfectly safe and proper practice.
